Traditionally, masquerade balls are elegant and formal affairs, so start your outfit with what you typically wear to a black tie event - i.e. a ball gown for women or a tuxedo for men.

Choose the right mask for you
As you know, the mask is the most important part of the masquerade costume. If you're not really a fancy dress fan and you want to dress fairly understated, go for a mask like this one that only covers your eyes.
